Become a Student Alumni Ambassador

Are you looking for ways to get involved on campus, make valuable connections with alumni and learn more about U of T—all while developing your leadership skills?


The Student Alumni Ambassador Program allows students to explore a career in the intriguing and growing field of professional advancement while gaining hands on volunteer experience helping to build connections between students, alumni, and the University of Toronto.  The program is run by Alumni Relations in support of the stated university priority of transforming undergraduate education to prepare graduates for lifelong career success.

Volunteers for the program should have a friendly and confident demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to consistently represent U of T in a professional manner, and dedication to supporting the mission and values of the University of Toronto.

Those who satisfactorily complete the program will be eligible to record their participation on their co-curricular record


Learning Outcomes

By the completion of the program, students should:

  • possess a basic understanding of the field of professional advancement and it’s major components and departments within an educational setting (including Alumni Relations, Development, Stewardship, and Communications)
  • be able to articulate mutual value proposition of Alumni Relations and various proof points on both sides
  • have an advanced awareness of current U of T news, developments, and campus life
  • understand the different types, and significance, of support the university receives from alumni and friends (including advocacy, volunteering, philanthropy, and expertise)
  • be able to demonstrate a level of comfort starting, steering, and existing strategic conversations with strangers
  • have experience planning, managing, delivering, or supporting advancement events with a strategic focus
  • have a professional network of alumni and advancement professionals


Key Program Components and Activities

While participating in the program, students will:

  • meet, interact, and learn from advancement professionals
  • represent the student body at alumni events to help keep alumni connected to U of T life and developments
  • help educate other students about the types of contributions alumni make in support of the university and toward enhancing the student experience
  • promote the benefits of being a U of T alum and opportunities for students to engage with the university and alumni community after graduation
  • foster student and alumni pride in, and sense of, association with the University of Toronto and inspire students and alumni to continue supporting U of T’s mission


How to Participate

Preference will be given to well-rounded students who:

  • are enrolled in undergraduate studies (any program or faculty)
  • have leadership experience in university (or high school) clubs and/or sports teams
  • are willing to commit six to eight hours a month (including regular meetings every second Friday from 1:30 – 3:00 pm and volunteering at frequent alumni events often held evenings and weekends between October and May 2017
  • are confident, outgoing extroverts comfortable initiating conversations with strangers and able to make them feel at ease
  • behaves consistently with clear personal values that complement those of U of T
